Midwest Sports Charity Open: Day 1 Results (Evening)

Day 1 is in the books!  All the higher seeded players won today, but not without a few hiccups along the way.

In the first match of the night session, Smurfette was pushed to three sets by Dilbert, but eventually prevailed, 5-7, 6-2, 6-3.  After getting broken twice in the first set, Smurfette improved her play and held serve the rest of the way.  The key moment of the match came early in the third.  Serving at 1-1, Smurfette saved four break points to hold at 2-1, then immediately broke Dilbert, and then cruised the rest of the way.

In the second evening match, Woody Woodpecker dispatched Homer Simpson, 6-3, 6-4.  However, the match was anything but straightforward for Woody, who had to save three break points in his opening service game, and was eventually broken several games later.  As his unforced errors began to accumulate, Woody grew visibly frustrated.  Against a weaker opponent, Woody was able to survive on determination alone.  In the quarterfinals, however, he will have to clean up his play against a much stronger opponent (Smurfette) with a formidable return of serve.
